What is the Pupil Premium Grant?
The Pupil Premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils of all abilities and to close the gaps between them and their peers. Each year, this funding is deployed by school in a range of ways to support disadvantaged pupils and this is reviewed each September to identify the impact it has had.
Where does the funding come from?
Pupil Premium is allocated to schools based on the number of children who are currently known to be eligible for Free School Meals, whose parents serve in the Armed Forces and children who have been looked after in local authority care continuously for more than six months.
Why do schools get the extra funding?
The purpose of the Pupil Premium is to help schools to provide targeted support for vulnerable children- not necessarily just children who qualify for FSM.
As in previous years this funding is in addition to the school’s budget and represents a major investment in pupils.
At Rosehill School we have a tiered approach to Pupil Premium, based on 'The EEF Guide to the Pupil Premium' of High-Quality Teaching, Targeted Academic Support and Wider Strategies. This tiered approach is helpful in making decisions regarding the allocation of funding, energy, training and time.
Our 3-year plan from 2022 – 2025
To prioritise spending, we have adopted the tiered approach for each category. Within each category, we have chosen a number of interventions. This focussed approach ensures the best chance of success for each intervention. Intervention activities include:
Quality of Teaching
- Professional development and CPD for staff – Fortnightly CPD slot for teaching staff to help improve high quality individualised teaching and facilitation of learning throughout the school and focus on progress.
- Support and CPD for Early Career Teachers – A termly teaching development programme delivered by experts which involves training/CPD/attending related courses.
- Provision of a range of resources, and technology, to support high quality teaching and learning – including to support online safety and mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Targeted Academic Support
- To ensure that pupils in receipt of PP funding do not fall behind their peers in terms of overall progress and attainment – i.e., through targeted English teaching- one-to-one/small group tuition (e.g., reading, handwriting, problem solving and reasoning skills).
- 1:1/small group speech, language and communication intervention support and additional teaching and learning opportunities – i.e., targeted PSHE interventions. Using teaching support staff through PSHE, Reading, Creative Arts, Music, Dance, Drama, Physical Education, wellbeing and therapeutic sessions.
- To increase pupil independence and preparation for adulthood by developing social communication skills, life skills, problem solving and reasoning skills; small group tuition/ targeted Maths teaching, home management, travel training, work experience, careers guidance.
Wider Strategies
- Intervention support provided for pupils identified with sensory processing difficulties – Sensory OT input/ sensory circuits/ breaks/ regulation techniques/ sporting and enrichment opportunities.
- To maintain and develop supportive relationships between school and families – engage parents and carers in school life and the education of their children and support parents in accessing early help provision, attendance support, and mental health and wellbeing support.
During the current academic year, it is expected that Rosehill School will receive £65,960. Our belief is that to truly make an impact on the individual lives of the young people at whom this funding is aimed, we need to know and understand our pupils’ needs well. Whilst acknowledging that we do have small groups of pupils who have similar needs and would benefit from ‘pooled’ resources, there are many who require bespoke support and interventions to improve their life chances.
