Why is attendance important?
- Attendance and attainment go hand in hand, and to make progress, children need to be in school. Caring about Learning, Learning about Caring.
- Your child will gain knowledge and skills such as reading, writing, personal development and much more!
- Your child will learn to think creatively and independently.
- Having a good education will improve your child’s chances of success later in life.
- By interacting with other people such as teachers and classmates, your child will develop social skills.
- Regular school attendance is good for your child’s physical and mental health.
- A regular and punctual attendance pattern will help your child when they enter the world of work.
Most importantly, it allows your child to have fun!
The link between attendance and attainment in school is clear. The more a pupil is in school, the more they increase their opportunity to fulfil their potential.
Helping children to create a pattern of regular attendance is everybody’s responsibility – parents and carers, pupils, and all members of school staff.
If you need any support with your child’s attendance, please speak with our attendance officer, who would be happy to help.

How can I encourage regular attendance, and what should I do if my child is struggling to attend school?
- Show your child that you think school is important. Read the home school diary, and ask about their day.
- Praise their achievements.
- Don’t keep your child off for unnecessary reasons.
- Make sure your child arrives at school on time and is ready to learn.
- Recognise that if children get into bad habits at an early age, it is hard to break them later in life, poor attendance in the early years can turn into a worse problem at the end of their school career.
Most importantly, talk to us. If you are struggling to get your child into school, have a chat with C Turner or K Lloyds.

Absence Procedures
If your child is absent, you must:
- Contact the school office via telephone before 8.30am on the 1st day of their child’s absence and any subsequent days when their child is off school.
- The school office is staffed from 8:00am to accept parent calls. The telephone number is: 0115 9155815.
- Parents/Carers will be expected to provide an explanation for the absence and an estimation of how long the absence will last, e.g., one school day.
- Wherever practicably possible, medical appointments should be made outside of school hours or during a holiday period. Time out of school to attend appointments should be kept to a minimum and parents/ carers will be expected, where possible, to bring their children to school both before and after the appointment time, not withdrawing them for the entire school day.
If your child is absent, we will:
- A telephone call will be made to the parent/carer of any child who has not reported their child’s absence on the first day of absence. A school comms text message/email/letter will also be sent.
- If there has been no communication on the first day of absence, the Attendance Champion is informed. Contact may be made with additional emergency contact numbers, and any additional agencies who are working with the family, i.e., social workers.
