The festival of Science and Curiosity

The festival of Science and Curiosity is an annual festival in Nottinghamshire which is all about showcasing a world of science and curiosity that’s all around us every day. For the last decade, people across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire have been investigating, examining, experimenting and experiencing things about the world around them and having fun while they do it! The festival is a two-week event, showcasing some amazing activities in the community, such as in libraries, museums and other public places.

A large part of the project is also working in educational settings with Science specialists in their field teaching a series of lessons which astound and amaze! For the second year running, Rosehill School has played an important part in the festival. This year we have been so lucky to secure a PhD Chemistry Student from Nottingham University who has been in school teaching a series of lessons for two classes on germs and microbes! From an introduction to Biology and Microorganisms, bacteria, explaining symbiosis (in a simple way as our student put it!), enzymes and a range of otherwise complex scientific topics, our pupils yet again enjoyed engaging with hands-on experiments and no shortage of wow moments! We have enjoyed a world of Science and life beyond the human eye, from using microscopes and seeing black light for the first time, right up to separating materials, and making plastic from milk! Such an enriching experience for so many of our pupils at Rosehill. In addition to this, we have also matched a series of lessons from the Festival that every pupil in school will take part in throughout the week! This year pupils make their very own lava lamp and also create a rainbow inside a jar!
